Review: English-Tagalog Dictionary Website

October 20th, 2006 by Elaine · 11 Comments

Learn a New Language: Rosetta Stone
I just received an email from my cousin in the Philippines. The email was written in both English and Filipino/Tagalog, so I had a little trouble reading it. Thank goodness for Google and the website it led me to, foreignword.com. Just choose English-Tagalog or Tagalog-English, then enter the word in question. For example, “kaarawan,”

Tagalog term

English translations

kaarawan n. anniversary; birth; birthday

There were a few words in my cousin’s email that I wasn’t able to translate on this site, but she may have been using slang. The website has a section that allows users to add terms with their translation. Maybe once I figure out what that email says, I’ll add to the dictionary!

Anong balita sa radio at TV
Ganun pa rin kumakapa sa dilim
Minsa’y na isip ko ng umalis na lang dito
    Limutan ang lahat, lumipad, lumayo

    Bato bato sa langit
    Tamaan wag magalit
Alam naman natin kung sino ang tuso

Sa bawat sumpang umi-iyak singil ko ay piso
Sa bawat lumuluhang dukha — alay ko’y dugo

    May pag-asa ka kapatid. Kaibigan
    Hanga’t ako’y humihinga may pag-asa pa

    Sinong sawa sinong galit
    Sumigaw ngayong gabi

Ngayong gabi ako ang sundalo mo
Habang ika’y tulog ako’y gising nakabantay sa iyo - kasi mahal kita
Tingnan mo pag-ibig ko’y sa iyo lamang

Thanks for visiting our site, Krisandra! There are too many words here to look up, can you give us a brief translation?

  • 4 Drake // Nov 25, 2006 at 9:13 am

    Here’s the translation:
What’s the news on the radio and TV
Still the same, groping in darkness
Sometimes, I have thought of simply leaving
    Forgetting everything, fly, go away

    Stones from the sky
whoever it hits, do not be mad
We already know who is sly/cunning

For every cursed crying, I charge a peso
Sa bawat lumuluhang dukha — alay ko’y dugo

    You, sibling, have hope. Friend
As long as I am breathing, there is still hope

    Who’s tired, who’s angry
    Shout on this night

For this night, I am your soldier
While you’re sleeping, I’m awake guarding you- because I love you
See that my love is only for you

Thanks for stopping by, Irene. See the last part of Drake’s response to Krisandra for the translation.

Here’s another site my sister sent me, it’s a Tagalog quiz:
    http://iteslj.org/v/t/basic.html

Pay attention to the ones you get wrong, it will keep asking you until you get everything right!

You can also choose to go from English to Tagalog instead. It’s very good for practicing your language skills.
