My sister-in-law just sent me this great link, Elf Yourself. Just insert a face onto the dancing elf’s body and you’ve got a great holiday greeting. It’s easy to personalize and much more fun than the standard e-card!

Here’s the link to Sammy the Elf and Sophie the Elf. Too funny! My kids love to see themselves dancing around on my screen. The first time he saw it, Sammy asked, “Is that me?”

There’s hardly even any advertising, just “Elf Yourself: A Gift from OfficeMax” along the top of the window. Though it may be that my pop-up blocker is just hard at work….

The site is occasionally down and has a few bugs (it keeps sending out the same link -even if you put in different pictures), but it’s entertaining once you get in! Go ahead, give it a try!

Yesterday I took Sammy and Sophie to the La Leche League Garage Sale Fundraiser. I bought a great electronic keyboard toy for just $2.00! Both kids enjoy playing with it, but especially Sammy. Here’s a great video of Sam dancing to the music!

Book Review: Tales from the Crib

I just read Tales from the Crib by Risa Green. It was such a great book that I finished it in one day. Tales from the Crib tells the story of Lara Stone, a brand new mom who thought that all of her troubles would disappear as soon as her miserable pregnancy was finally over. She is rudely awakened (literally) by the fact that she has a noisy, cranky baby to tend to 24-7.

The main character of the book is a wealthy LA fashionista with a stingy, though supportive husband. They decide to get a live-in nanny, but since Lara is still nursing, she is unable to leave her baby for more than two hours at a time without resorting to the “S and M-like pumping bras” to collect milk for her daughter.

The journey from selfish, cynical valley girl to loving mom is the main storyline, but colorful characters such as the voodoo nanny, the estranged father with an ex-stripper fiancee, and “Mommunists” bring a lot of laughs to the party.

I highly recommend this book to all new moms, as well as anyone who is looking for something lighthearted and fun to read.

Tales from the Crib is the sequel to Notes From The Underbelly, which I am eager to read next. Since my public library does not carry it, I guess I’m going to buy myself a copy from Amazon.com. When looking for Tales from the Crib, be sure to note the author’s name (Risa Green), since there are several books out there with the same title.

Stop calling me a dork

Do you know the true meaning of the word “dork?” I thought it was an affectionate way of calling a person dumb or stupid. Apparently there are other meanings. Look it up and you’ll be glad you did. Take your child to work day

Well at least it is for the rest of the city. My company decided to hold a special day during the summer when school isn’t in session.

When I took the train yesterday, I saw all these kids sitting with their mom/dad. The kids all had excited looks in their faces (they have no idea). Their mom or dad also had a happy and proud look. These are the same people I see on the train everyday (well almost everyday). They usually have solemn faces – probably counting the number of years before they retire. People were actually walking slower from the train station to their respective offices. Although there was one parent who had to pickup their child since he was being distracted by the incoming trains. For the most part, people were generally in a happy mood.

This had me thinking what would I do if Sammy was old enough to come with me to work. At this point, I don’t think he has any idea what I do for a living. If you haven’t seen the video clip of Sammy’s impression of daddy working, you should check it out now:

It’s a clip of him banging on his toy which represents the keyboard and him occassionally moving the mouse. He must have been watching me work when I have my work from home days.

I don’t think Sammy would be all that interested in coming to my work. I sit in meetings most of the time. I talk to people on IM, sometimes I talk to Elaine when she has a chance to go online. That might be the highlight of the day for him too. Right now he keeps asking me “what are you doing?” over and over again every two or three minutes. He can actually be a manager at my office. He could do that all day, but to different people. Though, we’d have to work on his timing.
