Oreo Truffles Recipe Update

I have been getting rave reviews from everyone who has tasted my Oreo Truffles. Mostly good reviews from those who have tried to make them. One of Marlo’s friends made them for a Super Bowl party. Her guests were so impressed, she decided not to share the recipe so they wouldn’t know how easy it was to make.

Another friend said she had such a hard time dipping all the balls in chocolate that it took her three hours to finish. I didn’t get to ask her what kind of chocolate she used. She was probably not using Log House Chocolate Almond Bark. It melts and coats so much easier than chocolate chips! My local Target stores sold 20-oz packages of it around Christmastime, and put it on clearance shortly afterwards. Now that it’s March, I’m having trouble finding it again. Some recipes suggest melting in 1 tbsp. vegetable shortening to each package of chocolate chips to make coating easier and give the final product a nice shiny finish.

Melting Tips:

My brother tried to make this recipe, with disastrous results. He accidentally scorched his chocolate in the microwave, making the coating lumpy and bitter.

If you are going to use your microwave to melt your chocolate, place the chocolate chips or finely chopped almond bark in a microwave safe bowl. (I prefer Corelle bowls for this.) Melt on high for 1 minute, then stir. If the lumps do not stir out, microwave again for 15 seconds, then stir again. Repeat 2-3 times, as necessary, stirring frequently. If you heat the chocolate too long and burn it, discard it and start over with new chocolate. If the chocolate thickens while you are dipping the truffles, reheat for another 15-30 seconds.

Recipe Variations:

Mint Truffles: Add 2 tsp of peppermint extract to the Oreo/cream cheese mixture. Mix to incorporate, then coat with chocolate. Minty goodness! I have also heard that Mint Oreos can be used instead of the regular Oreos and mint extract.

Frango-style: Last week I started to make a batch of mint Oreo truffles, but was interrupted by my kids. I quickly placed the cookie/cream cheese filling in a quart size zip-top bag in the fridge. To my delight, when I returned to them, they had formed into a huge rectangular patty. I cut open the bag to remove the contents whole. Then I simply sliced them into little rectangles and coated them with the melted chocolate. Once they were cooled, I placed the finished mint Oreo truffles in mini-muffin paper liners. They looked and tasted wonderful! It reminded me of the Frango Mint Chocolates.

Have you tried this recipe? If so, what are some your variations? I’d love to hear them.

Hi, made these also & drizzled white choc over the dark & looked great. Newest adventure was to use Nutter Butter cookies in place of Oreos and dipped in white chocolate – delicious – gave to teachers in tin containers for Christmas!!!!

I make these all the time. I had to make 4 batches and drop them off at different houses for the holidays. For Christmas I dipped them in white chocolate, and I sprinkled broken candy cane on top of them. They are always a hit.

I’ve found that if you add a tablespoon or so of cream to the oreo/cream cheese mixture, they are much better! they’re much smoother inside than without, and if you refrigerate the balls before you coat them with the chocolate, they’re just as easy to work with!

oh yeah, and last year for christmas, i added some eggnog to some of the truffles instead of the aforementioned cream. they were awesome too! you can also mix in some of that powdered coffee drink mix to change up the flavor

For the Coffee Lover Adult Version:

I made these last year with freshly ground (extra-fine) dark roast coffee beans and Kalua mixed into the Oreo/creamcheese center.

Word on the street is I’m exiled to the kid’s table if I fail to produce them again this year…..

I have found that the best way to do oreo truffles (and i have numerous fans, some of which have tried to make them) is to dip them in real white chocolate such as bakers and dip them twice so that you really get the taste of the creamy white chocolate. Using 2 lbs of white chocolate isn’t cheap but its the best way to do it because the artificial sweetness isn’t there to mask the oreo filling.

This is a great recipe. I use it all of the time. When I melt chocolate, I use the defrost setting on my microwave. It NEVER scorches. It takes a little longer, but works every time.

Oh, and I forgot another tip. I spray my hands and utensils with Pam before I roll the truffles. That way they don’t stick.

Hi, so this is one my first time making the oreo truffles, i’ve wanted to make them since i tried the ones my friend’s made, they were great. So i just have a question about making them. When crushing the oreo cookies, do u leave out the cream from the cookie?

Angela, you use the whole cookie – cream and all. You can even use Double Stuf or any variety of Oreo cookie. I plan to try it with the new Golden Oreos this week. Enjoy!

When I make mine I add the chocolate (white, milk, or dark) to the oreos and cream cheese, then roll them in more crushed oreos, instead of dipping them in chocolate. My kids love to help and they are always a huge hit! we usually make them as gifts for every holiday and though our hands tire quickly its worth the praise they bring!

Gina, that is a great idea! Dipping in chocolate is the hardest part! I will definitely try that next time. Thanks for sharing!

I made these using chocolate-filling Oreos because I have never been a big fan of the white cream. I also used the advice of previous posters to add a little cream to the cookie “mud” and a little shortening to the coating chocolate. The insides turned out a little pudding-y but the outsides are glossy and the flavor is divine. I may have just added a little too much cream, so be careful about that. I dusted them with powdered sugar before the coating hardened and they look great. I also tried using the toothpick method but got frustrated and ended up just using my fingers. If a little is good, a lot is great, right?! It was messy but easy and fun. Thanks for the great recipe! I am sure I will do this again and again.
