This is Sophie on top of Sammy’s desk.
Sophie loves to climb. She climbs stairs, furniture, boxes, Sammy’s step stools, whatever she can! She reminds me of a story my own mom used to tell me about when I was Sophie’s age….
When I was growing up, we lived in the top floor of a three-flat apartment building. I loved to look out the window, but I was so short! I pushed chairs, boxes, anything I could get my hands on so that I could climb up to the window. Once my makeshift staircase was finished, I climbed to the top, pushed out the window screen, and sat in the window sill with my feet dangling out of the third floor window.
Shortly afterwards, the phone rang. It was a neighbor alerting my mom to the legs sticking out into the sky. My mom snatched me from the window and dismantled my staircase. My dad then installed bars in that window so that my stunt could not be repeated.
Nowadays, there are safety devices you can buy to protect children from climbing out windows without blocking fire escape routes. We considered buying the Window Guard that allows the window to be opened, but can be removed easily by parents in case of emergency. Instead, we installed the Window Wedge that prevents the window from being opened more than a few inches. It was very easy to install and inexpensive.
Sophie knows how to climb up the stairs, but not down yet, so every staircase in our house has the Safety 1st Security Gates installed at the top and bottom floors.
We’ll be ready for her when she starts trying to climb up to the window.
You can see her in action in this video:

Sophie’s queen of the world!
My niece likes to jump about though, instead of climbing. But then, it was dangerous to let her stay up there!
Erwin, Sophie would love to demonstrate her climbing abilities next time she sees you.
Thanks for stopping by, Lyndonmaxewell. Hope your niece stays safe!
